How to use the Meta Tag Checker

    1. Paste the title tag of your page into the first field. You can copy it from your SEO plugin or from the page source, inside the <title> tag.
    2. Paste the meta description into the second field.
    3. Add the full page URL so the preview shows the right breadcrumb.
    4. Read the length bars. Green means the text fits; amber means it is short or may be cut; red means it is missing or too long.
    5. Fix anything listed under the preview, then copy your final text back into WordPress or your CMS.

Why the checker measures pixels, not only characters

Google does not cut titles at a fixed number of characters. It cuts them when they reach a set display width, roughly 600 pixels for titles on desktop. A title full of wide letters such as W and M runs out of space sooner than one with narrow letters such as i and l. That is why two 60-character titles can look different in the results. This tool measures your text in the same Arial font sizes Google uses, so the warning matches what searchers actually see.

What a good title and description look like

    • Title: about 50 to 60 characters, main keyword near the start, one clear benefit, and your brand at the end if space allows.
    • Description: about 120 to 155 characters, written as a short answer or promise, with a reason to click.
    • Unique: every page should have its own title and description. Duplicates make it harder for Google to choose the right page.

    Pros

    • Measures pixel width as well as characters
    • Live desktop-style Google preview
    • Instant, private and free; nothing is sent to a server
    • Flags missing tags, repeats and non-https URLs

    Cons

    • Google may still rewrite your title or description
    • Pixel widths are close estimates, not exact for every browser
    • Checks one page at a time, not a whole site
    • Does not fetch tags from a live URL automatically

    Frequently asked questions

Does Google always show my meta description?

No. Google shows your description when it matches the search well. For other searches it may build a snippet from text on the page. A clear, accurate description still raises the chance it is used.

Is the meta description a ranking factor?

Not directly. It affects how many people click your result, and a better click-through rate brings more traffic from the rankings you already have.

How long should a title tag be in 2026?

Keep it under about 600 pixels, which is usually 50 to 60 characters. Put the words that matter most first so nothing important is cut.
