Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, and see how long your text takes to read and to speak aloud. It is useful for blog posts, client briefs, meta descriptions, social captions and video scripts.
How to use the Word Counter
- Type directly into the box or paste text from Google Docs, Word or your CMS.
- The counts update instantly as you type. There is no button to press.
- Check reading time for articles and speaking time for scripts, podcasts and presentations.
- Watch the average sentence length. If the tool suggests splitting sentences, look for long ones joined by "and" or "which".
- Press "Clear text" to start again.
How the numbers are calculated
A word is any group of letters or numbers separated by spaces, so "SEO-friendly" counts as one word. Characters include every letter, space and punctuation mark, while "No spaces" removes spaces, line breaks and tabs. Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line. Reading time uses an average adult silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute, and speaking time uses about 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for voiceovers and talks.
Useful length guidelines
- Meta description: about 120 to 155 characters.
- Title tag: about 50 to 60 characters.
- Blog post: as long as the topic needs. Guides that answer a question fully are often 1,200 to 2,500 words; quick answers can be far shorter.
- Video script: about 150 words for each minute of video.
- Sentences: an average under 20 words keeps most writing easy to follow.
Pros
- Live counts with no button to press
- Reading and speaking time estimates
- Average sentence length for readability
- Works offline in your browser; text stays private
Cons
- Word count alone does not measure quality
- Reading speed varies by reader and topic
- Sentence detection can miss unusual punctuation
- No grammar or spelling checks
Frequently asked questions
Does word count affect SEO?
Not directly. Search engines reward pages that answer the query well. Longer pages often rank because they cover more of the topic, not because of the number itself.
Why is my count different from Microsoft Word?
Tools treat hyphens, numbers and symbols slightly differently. Small differences of a few words are normal.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to our server.
