Free URL Slug Generator

Turn any title into a short, clean URL slug. The tool converts text to lowercase, removes accents, symbols and filler words, joins words with hyphens and trims the result to a sensible length, ready to paste into WordPress or any CMS.

How to use the Slug Generator

  1. Type or paste the title of your page or post.
  2. Keep “Remove stop words” ticked to drop words like “the”, “and” and “for” that add length without meaning.
  3. Tick “Remove numbers” if the title includes a year or count that may change later, such as “10 tips” or “2026”.
  4. Set a maximum length. Around 60 characters keeps URLs readable; the tool never cuts a word in half.
  5. Press “Copy slug” and paste it into the permalink or URL field of your CMS.

What makes a good URL slug

A slug is the part of the URL after your domain that identifies one page, for example /seo-tips-small-businesses/. Good slugs are short, readable and describe the page, so both people and search engines understand them before clicking. Google recommends using hyphens to separate words and keeping URLs simple. Avoid dates and numbers that will go out of date, because changing a published URL later means setting up redirects and can lose some link value.

Slug best practices

  • Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only.
  • Include the main keyword, without repeating it.
  • Keep it to about three to six meaningful words.
  • Do not change the slug of a page that already ranks unless you add a 301 redirect from the old URL.
  • Match the slug to the topic, not to a temporary headline.

Pros

  • Removes accents, symbols and extra spaces automatically
  • Optional stop word and number removal
  • Never cuts a word in half at the length limit
  • One-click copy, free and private

Cons

  • English stop word list only
  • Does not check if the slug already exists on your site
  • Removing stop words can occasionally change meaning
  • Non-Latin scripts are removed rather than transliterated

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove stop words from URLs?

Usually yes, as long as the slug still makes sense. “/how-to-start-a-blog/” becomes “/start-blog/”, which is shorter and still clear.

Hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators, which makes slugs easier to read for people and search engines.

Can I change the slug of an old post?

You can, but add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one so visitors and search engines are not sent to an error page.
